TITLE: EVIDENCE OF EXPOSURE TO AND HUMORAL IMMUNE RESPONSE AGAINST HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS AMONG MALES AND FEMALES IN OSUN STATE
Summary: Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are double stranded DNA naked viruses that have tropism for epithelial and mucosal cells of humans. There are over 200 genotypes of HPVs, but while the low-risk types (such as HPV -6 and -11) cause benign tumors of head and neck; the high-risk types (like HPV -16 and -18) cause cervical cancer in women and genital warts in both genders. In Nigeria, HPV-induced cervical cancer ranks the second most frequent cancer among women with high morbidity/mortality. It is hence desirable to know the current prevalence rates of low- and high-risk HPV infections among sexually active humans (males and females) attending Osun state University teaching hospital.
